Cuba Street Strut
2018
for jazz combo
This was my first composition to be performed! I went through a stage of singing and then transcribing melodies which would form the basis of this work, this is one of the last works done in this fashion. The melody came to me as I walked down Cuba Street towards my apartment. Describing the journey as a strut was a bit of creative licence, as I don't think my gait resembles a strut in any way. The task was to write a lead sheet and get as much info into a compact page, without it being too much. I enjoyed this challenge, and as an assignment, it was very different from the other ones at university.
