Father Cold
2019
for ambisonics
I still consider this piece the jewel in the crown of my undergrad. It's one of the few works I feel has stood the test of time. Making it was an incredibly positive experience and it remains notable as one of my first public presentations. What made the creation of this work so memorable was its collaborative nature. It was a fun and novel opportunity to work with classmates. It has several poignant memories attached; from one of our classmates rescuing a stuck hydrophone from the fountain on a wintery Wellington day, to the infamous mic-drop, where the stand of the $10K ambisonic microphone collapsed over a viewing platform mid-recording - the results and reaction were spectacular. This project was also my first dive into vlogging, where "G'day! How are yah?" became my catchphrase for a brief time. After watching the short documentary about the project again, I feel inspired to create more works of this nature.
