Ils se sont disputés
2020
for duet for marimba & violin
Another piece that fell victim to the "Google Translate Trap" (see the Der Mysteriöse Tanz for more details), but regardless has ultimately remained a piece I'm fairly happy with. For simplicity, I now just refer to the work as "Disputes". This was the time where I rediscovered my love for percussion writing. I have the distinct memory of realising the marimba could play more than two notes at a time, which provided so many more creative opportunities to explore. Disputes sits as the intermediary between my first go at percussion writing; The Monsters (2018), and later, more ambitious works, such as Repercussions (2021) and Pareidolia I (2022). A revision has been on the cards for years, I would love to take what I had and grow it into something bigger. I was still writing quite melodically at this stage, and there's a clear and deliberate interplay between the parts. I am certainly curious to see what a new take on the materials would look like.
